Reggae Boyz tackle Indonesia
published: Thursday | June 21, 2007

Phillips

Jamaica's Reggae Boyz kick off their four-game tour of Asia, when they face a less-than-full- strength Indonesia at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Central Jakarta at 7:00 this morning (7:00 p.m. Indonesia time).

Having only managed to secure indifferent results in their last three friendlies, expectations are that Jamaica's Reggae Boyz will return to winning ways at some time during this tour of the Middle East as the teams are not traditionally strong football nations.

There are no international-based players in Jamaica's 22-man squad to be captained by Donald Stewart, but the local contingent, many of whom were with the team when they won the Lunar Cup late last year, are now beginning to gather more experience under technical director Velibor 'Bora' Milutinovic and should be capable of holding their own against opponents who are yet to have a major breakthrough on the world stage.

Harbour View striker Fabian Taylor will lead the hunt for goals, while Stewart, fellow veteran Fabian Davis and exciting duo Mario Swaby and Demar Phillips should play key supporting roles.

Indonesia, who are currently preparing for the Asia Cup where they have been placed in Group D with favourites South Korea, will be at a further disadvantage as injuries to key strikers Boaz Salossa, their national league top scorer who broke his ankle last month and Saktiawan Sinaga, who failed a late fitness test, will not only miss today's friendly but the Asia Cup as well.

Veteran goalscorers

The team will now have to depend on veteran goal scorers Bambang Pamungkas and Ellie Aiboy who are both expected to suit up for today's friendly. In their last five games Indonesia, who are coached by Ivan Kolev, have two wins, two draws and one loss.

The Jamaican team will next face Vietnam on June 24, Malaysia on June 28 and Iran on July 2.
