Mona capture swim title at UWI Games

MONA CAPTURED the University of the West Indies (UWI) Games swimming title yesterday at the UWI swimming pool at the campus. Mona amassed 201 points to finish ahead of Cave Hill 196 and St. Augustine (STAG) 168.

Nicholas Peterkin of STAG and Maria-Elena Farmer of Cave Hill were the only male and female triple winners at the one-day meet. Peterkin won the 100 metre freestyle in 56.61 ahead of the Mona pair Ramon James (58.10) and Lance Rochester (1:02.2).

Peterkin then captured 200m freestyle in (2:09.84) in front of Dave Smith of Mona (2:11.32) and Andrew John-Ross of STAG (2:12.82).

A few minutes later, he completed his hat-trick when he won the 100m butterfly in 1:03.81 ahead of the Mona pair Matthew Stewart (1:04.47) and Rory Reid (1:20.29).

Farmer won the female 200m freestyle in 2:32.62 ahead of STAG 's Whitney Wint (2:52.92) and Kelly Gordon of Mona (3:06.97). Farmer then captured the 50m butterfly in 34.20 ahead of teammate Simone Kirton (35.73) and Nikita Legall of STAG (37.52).

Farmer completed her treble in the 100m butterfly in 1:23.21 ahead of the STAG pair of Legall (1:33.76) and Wint (1:39.78).

Mona's James captured the men's 50m backstroke in 30.35 ahead of teammate Matthew Bird (31.30) and STAG's Safi Rennie (33.13).

Women's events

Roberta Dowell of Cave Hill won the women's 50m backstroke in 35.92. The Mona pair of Lora D'Oyen(37.83) and Traci Callender (39.20) filled out the minor placings.

Kimani Brown of STAG won the men's 50m freestyle in 25.46 with Matthew Stewart of Mona (26.37) and Jherad Alleyne of Cave Hill (27.34) finishing second and third.

Tahira Redwood of Mona captured the women's 100m backstroke in 1:29.99 ahead of Bridget Bocage of STAG (1:31.41) and Dowell of Cave Hill (1:35.72).
