Lacking leadership
published: Sunday | May 20, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

The Minister of National Security has given it as his view that we need resocialisation to put thecountry back on its tracks.

This is a call to the population, as if the onus of change is wholly in their corner. Leadership is what is sadly lacking in the country. I emphasise this, because we are an imitative people and we imitate what our "betters" or our leadership puts forward as the raison d'tre of our national life. This has always been so.

Therefore, there is a compelling obligation on our leadership to put forward the best that is worthy of emulation. How often has this been done since 1962? Have we forgotten the embryo of violence since 1962?

What we have succeeded in doing with the help of many of our past politicians is to tear the country apart by violence, which has made us so notorious in the world. What we need is a return to sane, sober, incorruptible leadership that is really committed to Jamaica and gives tangible and imitative evidence of this. Singapore is not only an economic model - look at the response of the population to effective leadership.

Dr. Phillips, can we try this just once more?

I am, etc.,
