Imposters and amateurs
published: Saturday | May 19, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

I believe that Jamaica is a gold mine of opportunities just waiting to be explored. It's just that we are not allowed to recruit the right leaders. For too long we are governed by imposters and amateurs.

The power should belong to the people but it has been snatched from our grip by mafia-styled, unscrupulous politicians who dictate who we should vote for. This can be overcome by the people power, just simply refuse to vote.

As for poor services, crime and robbery, these are all problems that can simply be tackled by good ideas, something that the present two-party system has failed to address.

I would like to make some suggestions that could possibly solve some of our problems.

When it comes to bad roads, let's have a "voluntary toll system", whereby it is possible for all motorists to contribute their small change towards the improvement of their road.

Facilities could be put in place for all users of the road to contribute whatever amount they can afford into a secure vessel; this money could then be used to both create employment and upgrading of our roads.

As for crime and robbery, let's create a "criminal fund", whereby local businesses can voluntarily contribute monies towards catching and bringing to justice, all local criminals.

These monies could be used to both pay ransoms for information leading to arrests and convictions plus rewarding police officers who make such arrests.

I am sure that there are even better ideas out there in cyber-space, it's just that there doesn't seem to be any within the House of Parliament, so until there is a change for the better, simply refuse to vote.

I am, etc.,

G. PARKER
