Don't oppose Splashin River
published: Friday | May 18, 2007

Omar Walker ... rides Splashin River. - File

Orville Clarke, Freelance Writer

Both the Pick-9 and Super-6 offer carryovers at Caymanas Park tomorrow.

At last Saturday's big Lotto Day race meet comprising 13 races, outsiders such as IL CAIMANO at 14-1 in the Lotto Classic and KING AL at 12-1 in the 11th race ensured there would be carryovers on both exotic bets.

The Pick-9, which embraces races three to 11, boasts a $1.5 million carryover. The Super-6, meanwhile, offers $910,382,65. It will be conducted from race six to 11.

We look at the Super-6 which gets under way with a restricted allowance V (non-winners of two) over the straight five course to be contested by nine starters including leading lights SOFTLY MY DEAR, GENUINE GOLD, AMERICAN DON and WHEELS OF LAW.

Golden opportunity

Strictly at the weights, AMERICAN DON gets a golden opportunity to score an overdue win with crack apprentice Jason Simpson now riding him from the convenient mark of 52.0kg.

Trained by Paul Smith, AMERICAN DON finished a close third to HIGH GOLD when last venturing over the straight on March 24 and having been kept on the move at exercise, gets the nod over SOFTLY MY DEAR, who ran a blinder in defeat at long odds on April 21 when finishing a length third to BORN-A-GRIERFIELD over 1300 metres, this after running wide on the lead into the straight.

Next on the programme is a 4-y-o and up maiden condition race over 1200 metres confined to apprentice riders (no whips).

Included in the lineup is the fleet-footed SPLASHIN RIVER with hot apprentice Omar Walker in the saddle. Trained by Heaton Thomas, SPLASHIN RIVER has caught the eye at exercise in preparation for this race and should have little difficulty in making it a post-to-post affair in this type of race.

SIR BARRINGTON and BLUFF MASTER are his main dangers.

MR WICKER, who made a promising debut over the straight five course on May 2 when a fast-finishing second to DESIGNED FOR LUCK, looks the type who will enjoy a distance of ground and thus gets the nod over RUSH TO VICTORY and MS. BETTY G in the eighth race for maiden three-year-olds over 2000 metres.

NYAH MAN, perfectly drawn on the outside at post position 15, will be hard to beat in the ninth race over the straight five course.

The five-year-old horse enjoys galloping over the straight and from his lenient mark of 51.0kg, should not be caught. His main rivals are CHAIN OF COMMAND and TOUCHDOWN.

Take the free-running PASSA PASSA (knocking at the door) as a banker in the 10th race over 1300 metres for the Frankie Frazer Memorial Cup to be contested by only five starters.

And close the programme with Saturday's scorer KING AL, now back over the straight and best drawn at post position 16. Old rival ARCHANGEL and the recent course winner MUSTANG are twin dangers.
