DSP Dorrett Barrett-Latchman. - Ricardo Makyn/Staff Photographer
The following are letters received in response to Tuesday's feature on Dorrett Barrett-Latchman, a policewoman who fought off and helped detain a man who attempted to rape her.
You cannot trust anyone
The Editor, Sir:
I am a Jamaican residing in Florida and I read the article on the female cop who turned the tables on a rapist. Some of these men are so pathetic. I am really happy for her where the results are concerned. It could have been so much worse, it shows you can't trust anyone; as my grandmother would say, 'you can see the face, you can't see the heart'.
My prayers will be there for her as I hope she is praying for herself, as there is no situation that is greater than God.

A real inspiration
The Editor, Sir:
I just read the feature on the attack on DSP Barrett-Latchman and want to thank you for the article. Please convey my good wishes to her, and my prayers that she will soon be over this traumatic experience. She is a real inspiration to other women as she showed great courage during the attack, and afterwards, by her decision to continue to walk and not become a victim. Us women cannot cower in fear when confronted by such evil and we must take control of our circumstances.

Happy ending
The Editor, Sir:
I read the story about the attempted rape of Deputy Superintendent of police Dorrett Barrett-Latchman. It was a very good article and a great outcome. Just a suggestion: If there are any self-defence courses for females or males, maybe you could list a few or a contact number. It was a blessing that Mrs. Barrett-Latchman had training or maybe the outcome would have been different. I think this article not only could help others think about defending themselves, but they might even think of coming forward. Once again, good article.

I am praying for you
The Editor, Sir:
This is just to let her know that one of her colleagues, despite being hundreds of miles away, loves her and wishes to let her know that I am praying for her that she will continue to gain strength in abundance to heal. The many struggles we encounter in life are not for us to lose the lesson, but for us to use it to gather strength for future growth. Dorrett, you have seen it all. I know that God will guide you. Everything that happens, happens for a reason. Take heart and remember God gave you strength to fight and you have done that well.
Love and hugs to you.
