Port Royal's potential
published: Friday | May 18, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

I was heartened to hear the Mayor of Kingston in a speech recently in Boston, Massachusetts, urging Jamaicans in the diaspora to be part of an overall plan with the Government for the development of Port Royal as a main tourist drawing card, similar to Disney World, which incidentally attracts millions of tourists per year on its own. This could be in the form of individual investment for the donors in the diaspora, but would require careful planning. We could even enlist the help of agencies like Western Union.

I think a project like this would be a necessary catalyst for the overall development of the inner city of lower Kingston and Port Royal in particular, and the wider tourism entity in general. I am quite aware of the imminent elections, so I would suggest that any party that forms the next Government should see this as a matter of priority, in collaboration with the minister with responsibility for the diaspora.

We have been searching for oil and gold over the past decade, not realising the financial potential of this very great asset of Port Royal.

I am, etc.,
