Despite not leading any of the respective boys' and girls' seg-ments, St. Benedict's emerged the overall leaders, but only slightly, going into today's final day of the the four-day Institute of Sports/Swizzzle Primary Schools Athletics Championships at the National Stadium.
The Harbour View-based school leads with 19.75 points, marginally ahead in the overall standings of St. Patrick's (18.50), Spanish Town (18), New Providence (17), Angels and Belmont Park (14.25 each), St. Catherine (13), Waterford (9.50), Naggo Head (8) and Alpha (7) rounding out the top 10.
Angels Primary and New Providence Primary are the respective leaders in the boys' and girls' categories.
Angels Primary lead the girls' section after four finals with 14 points, slightly ahead of defending champions Spanish Town who are second on 12 points, St. Benedict's Primary third on 11, followed by St. Patrick's in fourth place with 9.50 points.
New Providence lead the boys' section with 17 points, four more than second-place St. Catherine 13, followed by St. Patrick's 9 and St. Benedict's 8.75 points.
Delighted with performance
Javiar Fairclough of St. Patrick captured the boys' Class One high jump with a leap of 1.48 metres. Zavian Williams of New Providence was second in 1.44m and Jovan Swaby third in 1.41m.
Fairclough was very delighted with his performance.
"I am feeling very good because at the G.C. Foster College track meet I came third and a prep school athlete from Kingsway Prep beat me and now that I have won, I really feel good," said the 12-year-old.
Louri-Ann Johnson of Angels won the girls' equivalent with a leap of 1.39m, ahead of Alpha's Krista-Gay Taylor 1.36m and Tavia Rankine of St. Patrick's, 1.33 p.m.
The championships conclude today with 34 finals down for contention, starting at 10:00a.m.
