  • Idle Ujama still in charge

    Ujama continue to lead in the Western Union Portland Major League competitio they were idle over the weekend.

    In recent action, Snow Hill went by Breastworks 2-0, Taurus edged Norwich 1-0, and Progressive edged past Eagle Strikers 2-1. Ujama lead the competition with 19 points and are closely followed by Norwich (18) and Snow Hill (17).

  • KC lose semi

    Despite an unbeaten century from skipper Ricardo Bartley, Kingston College were soundly beaten by St. Catherine in their two-day Colts semi-final cricket match at Little KC, Elletson Road, last week.

    Batting first, St. Catherine piled up 318 all out (Ricardo Williams 77, Aaron Johnson 75, Dwayne Anderson 68; Oshane McHugh 3-42, Akeem Dewar 3-100).

    When KC replied, they were bowled out for 195 and lost by 122 runs. Bartley hit an aggressive 100 not out with 15 fours, while Rushane Smith (3-54) was the pick of the St. Catherine bowlers.

  • Buff Bay in form

    The Kentucky Fried Chicken Eastern Conference basketball league tipped off recently at Folly Oval with the KFC All-Stars losing to Pure Players 84-62, in an exhibition game.

    In thecompetition, Buff Bay Hawks defeated Portland Rottweilers 66-42. Kirk Anderson had 17 baskets for the Buff Bay Hawks, while Courtney Clarke had 15 for Portland.

  • Alexander are champs

    Alexander Strikers defeated Eden Strikers 32-24 to capture the inaugural JN Money Transfer/Institute of Sports (INSPORTS) Community Netball League final at the Leila Robinson Courts on Sunday.

    Both teams entered the final without losing a match in the preliminary round, before playing their semi-final encounters earlier in the day. Alexander defeated Teflon Wild Flowers 30-17, while Eden earned a narrow 25-24 win over Determine Strikers.

  • Charlton win pool tourney

    Robert 'Bobby' Charlton from May Pen blanked Marlon 'Ants' Lynch from Portmore's Pool Plus 3-0 in the final of the Auto Craze/Guinness-sponsored 'B' class pool tournament (eight-ball) at Auto Craze Sports Bar, 12 Dunrobin Avenue, last weekend.

    With close to 60 players from all over the island participating, Charlton charted his way to the final by clipping Ocho Rios-based Rhys Chen 3-2 in one semi-final.

    Lynch got by fellow Portmore rival, Andrew Wilson, 3-2 in the other semi-final. However, the best-of-five final turned out to be a one-sided affair as Charlton was just too good.

    For his efforts, the winner received $20,000 and a trophy donated by Guinness, while Lynch secured $6,000 and trophy.

  • Galina cruise by Ramble

    Galina easily disposed of Ramble 2-0 in action from the Island Sport Trust Primary School girls' football and boys' basketball leagues at the Eden Park Sports Complex, in Jacks River, St. Mary.

    Kimoya Johnson in the sixth and 42nd minutes scored for the winners.

    The dynamic duo of Kayson Purcell (14 points) and Romario 'Rambo' Sherman (12) led the high-powered Galina attack to a 31-12 victory over an outclassed Ramble team on the basketball court.

    In the Breadfruit Zone, the steadily improving Mt. Angus team came from a goal down to defeat Galina 4-1. Goals were scored for Mt. Angus in the seventh and21st minutes by Danisha Watson, in the 25th by Antonette McKenzie and in the 48th by Eliza Brown.

  • Business House football

    The 2007 KSAFA Business House Football season kicks off today with a one-day five-a-side football rally for the Pronto Mix Trophy sponsored by Seprod Limited at the NWC playfield, Mona, starting at 9:00 a.m. The competition was scheduled to start last Saturday but was postponed as a result heavy rains. Twenty teams are expected to participate in this year's event with UTech, Special Anti-Crime Task Force and Wisynco Group Limited being the new teams. National Water Commission are the defending champions.

  • Mixed results for Vaz

    Portmore Missionary blanked Vaz II 5-0 and former champions Vaz I crushed newcomers Holy Childhood 4-1 as action continued in the Oliver's Decorating Prep School Table Tennis League.

    In the Portmore Missionary/Vaz II match, Glenroy Hopkins outplayed Ja-Chin Mullings 3-1, Franz Arnold crushed Jordane Morgan 3-0, Chelsea Durrant trounced Anna-Leah White 3-0, Kevel Campbell stopped Brian Mills 3-1 and Korey Moulton overpowered Chan Soman 3-0 for Portmore Missionary's 5-0 victory.

    In the Vaz I versus Holy Childhood encounter, Royce Harley, Sheneka Edwards, Ricardo Mills and Kemar Douglas gave 3-0 beatings to Akeem Pottinger, Katherina Johnson, Jamie Grandison and Keifer Spencer, respectively, for Vaz I's four wins. Roshane Allen outlasted Damian Daley 3-2, to pull one back for Holy Childhood.

  • Grand Lido competition

    Housekeeping, one of the fancied teams for top honours this year, maintained their unbeaten run, when they defeated Sanitation 4-1 on Monday, in the Grand Lido Braco Resort and Spa inter-department football competition.

    In the process, they became the first team to qualify for the semi-finals with a match in hand. All four goals were scored by different players for the winners, who led 3-1 at half-time.

  • Crunch time in St. Bess

    Four matches will be played this weekend to decide which team qualifiesto join STETHS, Holland Police Youth Club and African Estate in the semi-finals of the St. Elizabeth Wray and Nephew Major League football competition.

    Today, Balaclava United (23 points) will play second-place and mid-season champions, Holland, at Braes River.

    A win for Holland would make them joint leaders with STETHS on 37 points.

    Tomorrow, the crucial match-up will be between fourth-place Black River (27) and New River at New Town, while Middle Quarters (25) will play away at African Estate. The third game, which will only be of academic interest, sees Super Action host, Epping Forest, at Mountainside. All matches start at 3:30 p.m.

    A win for Black River would take them to 30 points and into the semis. They can also advance with a draw if Middle Quarters fail to win by eight goals.

  • Hurricane, ISCF win

    Hurricane and ISCF won the divisional finals in the CTL-sponsored Portmore/St. Catherine domino league at Caymanas Park, on Sunday.

    In the Division One final, Hurricane from Dunbeholden came from a four-point deficit at half-time to defeat Eradication from Gregory Park 300-286 and capture the $100,000 cash prize. Eradication secured $60,000 for being runners-up.

    In Division Two, ISCF (Police) drubbed Marleymount 300-258 to take the $50,000 prize, while the losing finalists secured $25,000.

    Right Stuff, who knocked out hot favourites - the previously unbeaten Caribbean Classic in the quarter finals, picked up $35,000 for having finished third in Division One, while Garveymeade secured $15,000 for doing likewise in Division Two.

  • Eagles strike again

    EAGLE STRIKERS won the $20,000 top prize for capturing the 2007 Portland INSPORTS/Dr. Donald Rhodd Netball League title by beating Reich 22-20 in the final played at Folly Oval, on Sunday. The repeat winners were also presented with the champion's trophy and medals, while Reich claimed $10,000 for second and Hope Bay $5,000 for third.

    In a competitive final, Eagle Strikers went to work early, taking the first quarter 5-2. However, despite losing the second quarter 6-5, Eagle Strikers went to the break at 10-8.

    The third quarter went to Eagle Strikers 7-6 and a determined Reich took the final quarter 6-5, but they needed to score more goals to topple the defending champions as they lost by a mere two points. In the third-place playoff, Hope Bay edged Manchioneal 15-14.
