The Editor, Sir:As human beings, we are entitled to our freedom of choice and that right is supposed to be respected by all.
The Holy Scriptures reiterated this right. To his ancient people of Israel, Jehovah said, "Behold I set before you this day blessing and curse, life and death. Choose." (Deut. 11:26.)
Whatever revulsion we may feel when we see Adam and Steve instead of Adam and Eve as partners, we have no right to subject them to gross brutality. To the accusers of the woman caught in adultery, Christ said he that is without sin, cast the first stone. Nobody took up that challenge.
Now to the issue. A transvestite stands in a rural Jamaican town. The man troubles no one. People, for no apparent reason start 'raining down blows' on the man.
Even people who claim solid Christian convictions relate the incident with a great deal of relish. They refer to Sodom and Gomorrah and consider the man's beating as a means of preventing God's wrath on the country. What's wrong with the Jamaican people?
I am, etc.,
