Malaria drive threatens bees
published: Saturday | May 12, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

I would publicly like to acknowledge the wonderful effort of the Ministry of Health in arresting the dreadful malaria mosquito.

However, in this exercise a very important point is being missed: whenever spraying or fogging is taking place, it is not only the mosquito that is being affected but also human beings with respiratory illnesses.

In addition to the human being being affected, the great pollinator honeybee is being decimated by this deadly poison intended for one victim (the mosquito). If careful consideration is not taken during these eradication exercises then, we could find ourselves in the middle of a dire food crisis.

As it stands, the existence of the honeybee is under threat from several quarters, namely: varroa mite, American foulbrood, severe weather changes and most recently, Colony Collapse Disorder which could cause the honeybee to become extinct if a solution is not found very soon.

As stated before, the MOH is doing its job, but with the present system of spraying/fogging it could mean our undoing.

I am, etc.,
