WESTERN BUREAU:
The tiny commercial town of Junction in St. Elizabeth was blazing with the heat of carnival fever last Saturday, when more than 1,000 residents descended on the square.
Supreme Ventures/Digicel-sponsored Jamaica Carnival had once again come to their town and the residents revelled until daybreak. It was literally a musical inferno inside the Pines Plaza, the venue where the carnival was hosted.
Skimpily-clad revellers
Inside the venue, teenagers and their elders rubbed shoulders as all their inhibitions disappeared. Skimpily-clad revellers seemed to have been the order of the night for patrons who were kept very busy singing and dancing to the riveting sounds of soca giant, Byron Lee and the Dragonaires band with Trinidadian-born calypsonian Oscar B and his entourage.
A barrage of songs such as High, Drum Beat, Woman, Caution and Tilala kept the audience very busy.
The 'Tiny Winey' Dance contest saw a number of women from St. Elizabeth competing for the top spot to guarantee entry in the finals at Richmond Park in St. Ann on April 8, where the overall winner will walk away with J$10,000 cash.
At the end of the contest, a robust Mauvalyn Williams, of Nain, St. Elizabeth, was voted winner from a field of five contestants.
Caught in the moment
Master of ceremony Jerry D was also caught in the moment and challenged Williams to a dance, but he too, was outdone and called for reservist Jomo Primo, lead singer with Byron Lee and the Dragonaires to face the challenge.
Showing off his expertise, he lasted a bit longer before finally giving up - Williams won again for the third time.
One Third stole the night with a sterling performance, having the women screaming out of character, as they delivered some of the songs, which made them popular on Digicel's Rising Stars Competition last year.

A section of the audience seems quite caught up watching the proceedings on stage at the Supreme Ventures/Digicel Jamaica Carnival, held in Junction, St. Elizabeth, last Saturday, as Byron Lee and the Dragonaires band performs.
