Western Bureau:

August Town bolstered their bid to avoid relegation and sank Wadadah in deeper trouble yesterday afternoon when goals by Daniel Shaw and substitute Ross Burton gave them a 2-0 win over the St. James team at the Catherine Hall Stadium in Montego Bay.

By virtue of their win, the August Town team, which remained in 10th position, moved up to 22 points, while Wadadah stay rooted in 11th place in the 12-team standing on 16 points, seven ahead of cellar dwellers Naggo Head.

"The team played extremely well today as we were quite fluent in attack and tight in defence," said August Town's coach Dominque Spaulding. "We came here today knowing that getting all three points would put some daylight between us and Wadadah and we were quite determined in our bid to get this win."

From the opening whistle it was obvious that August Town meant business, and inside the first minute they just missed taking the lead. Cezray Twyne broke out of midfield and fired a powerful grounder which rolled inches wide of the goal.

Wadadah countered in the fifth minute and came close to scoring when Markino Gillings caught the August Town defence out of position. However, an alert Devon Haughton, the August Town custodian, parried his shot wide of the goal.

Midway the half August Town went into overdrive and after missing back-to-back chances in the 21st and 23rd minutes through Kevin Blair, who side-footed wide and Shaw, whose free-kick was turned wide by the goalkeeper, they took the lead in the 28th minute when Shaw outran the defence and fired home, making the half-time score 1-0.

Wadadah started the second half in fine fettle, creating a good chance in the 52nd minute when Rohan Reid sent Christopher Currie clear. However, with the goalkeeper at his mercy, he fired high and wide of the target.

With Wadadah running out of steam and looking quite disorganised, August Town again took control, but faulty finishing prevented them from extending their lead at the 72nd minute when Shaw turned sweetly inside the box but fired wide. Two minutes later Burton fumbled inside the goal area before he was able to take a shot.

With time running out in the game, August Town sealed the issue in the 87th minute when Richards Hoo sent Burton clear with a superb pass. He dribbled two paces and fired past the goalkeeper, making the final score 2-0.
