Choose CCTV system carefully
published: Wednesday | January 3, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

AS A citizen of Jamaica living in the United States and a closed circuit security specialist, I read your article regarding the lack of closed circuit television in Jamaica with great interest. I agree, the benefits of CCTV far outweigh any negatives, especially cost. However, I feel I must caution anyone looking at a CCTV system to be wary of what type of system is purchased.

I believe that leaving system installation in the hands of individual businesses or private firms could result in inadequate coverage or customers spending a lot of money for nothing. Once you start trying to cut corners in equipment costs, you could end up with a system that does not fill the need and would be a waste.

With 30 years experience in the closed circuit business and work in the installation of systems at the Port of Miami, Miami Airport, several resorts, as well as small businesses and homes, I am well aware of the need to have a well planned system in place and having the right equipment for the job. I would hope all countries, especially Jamaica and other areas plagued with growing crime, would initiate programmes and incentives to advance the use of CCTV systems to protect individuals and property. The technology is there and could save money in the long run. But it does require foresight and planning to be effective.

I am sure there are others like myself, who would be happy to give professional help and advice at no cost for selecting proper equipment to ensure the best possible coverage for any given situation. I know the use of CCTV applications can help in the effort to reduce crime and hope all citizens of Jamaica will see the benefits of such a system.

I am, etc.,
