Health minister should resign
published: Thursday | October 5, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

I am truly amazed at the replies and the proposed solutions by the Minister of Health and his Permanent Secretary (PS) to the recent disclosures of the abominable state of affairs at the Victoria Jubilee hospital. A couple of questions come to my mind:

1. If Dr. Goldson had not broken the 'code of silence' and told the public about the dreadful state of affairs at the hospital would the Minister have told the nation about it and the plans he has to fix the entire health service as he has done this week?

2. Would the PS have announced the review of the health care system which she did this week?

Your readers will come to their own conclusion.

As far as I am aware, the minister and his PS are responsible to the people of Jamaica to provide an efficient and effective health-care service and as they have provided neither they should both do the decent thing and resign.

I am, etc.,

PETER J.C. THWAITES
