Spanish Town, St. Catherine:
President of the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS), Senator Norman Grant said the country could earn millions more from agriculture if more farm roads were in better conditions.
In highlighting the poor state of farm roads in the rural areas, the JAS president said the repairing of at least 15 parish council roads would yield an additional 20 million. This, he argued, would assist in developing the agricultural sector and rural areas.
Support rural development
Senator Grant, who was
speaking at the 17th annual
general meeting of the Jamaica Society of Agricultural Sciences (JSAS) on Tuesday, urged members to join in supporting rural development. According to him, agricultural and rural development must go together in order for the results to be beneficial to the country.
Specifically, he said the JSAS could contribute to agricultural and rural development by joining forces with the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA), which provides technical support to farmers.
He said the JAS will be establishing a business advisory council to guide the organisation's 30 year development plan for the sector. He said the council will manage the business objectives under the plan.
