Private sector and poverty
published: Thursday | August 31, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

You are correct in assuming I was not saying that Jamaica should not have sought independence. Liberating our people from the extensive poverty they endure is true independence.

I still insist that there is a social component to private property, and while no one is asking the private sector to become welfare agencies, I am asking them to use their economic power to assist in poverty alleviation by offering more jobs.

I agree with your editorial - the best way to alleviate poverty is through a strong economy - but in the meantime, we must be our brother's keeper. It's the Gospel.

I am, etc.,

Msgr. RICHARD ALBERT
