Free speech
published: Thursday | August 31, 2006

The Editor, Sir:

Your editorial titled 'Dancehall and free speech' leaves me confused. On the one hand you advise us readers, "This newspaper does not expound, promote or encourage uncouth or vulgar language." On the other, you warn, "We have to be careful about how we curtail free speech and the judgements which we make about what is or is not decent, which often is coloured by our own social biases."

Yes, but what does the law say? If the contention is that the law is indeed an ass as you also propound in your editorial, then the only remedy is to delete from the statute books such laws as refer to indecent language and clear the way and make it legal for the general populace, not only dancehall gorgons, to say anything, any time, anywhere. Until then what should we expect?

I am, etc.,
