English boxer says he'll beat Johnson
published: Thursday | June 8, 2006

JOHNSON

SHEFFIELD, England (CMC):

ENGLAND'S INTERNATIONAL Boxing Federation (IBF) light heavyweight champion Clinton Woods, scheduled to defend his title against Glen Johnson later this year, has declared that he will beat the Jamaican and prove himself as the best in the weight division.

Woods twice failed to defeat Johnson in previous meetings and believes he will reverse those results when they meet for a third time.

The two battled to a draw in November 2003 and Johnson out-pointed Woods in a rematch three months later to claim the IBF title.

I DON'T FEAR ANYONE

"I don't fear anyone in the division and, the form I am in, I believe I will not only beat Johnson but I believe I'll get the better of any light heavyweight in the world," Woods said this week.

"I want my win back off Johnson and prove that I'm a completely different fighter than I was two, three years ago," he added.

Johnson had given up the IBF (175-pound) belt he won over Woods to tackle American Antonio Tarver in December 2004.

The Florida-based Johnson beat Tarver but lost a rematch in June last year.

Johnson has a ring record of 44 wins (29 knockouts) against 10 losses and two draws, and Woods has 39 wins (24 knockouts) against three losses.

Woods retained his title on May 13 in a sixth-round stoppage of Australian Jason DeLisle.

Johnson captured the little-regarded International Boxing Association (IBA) belt when he defeated Jamaican Richard Hall in Florida earlier this year, and he is now anxious to beat Woods and reclaim a major belt.
