G.C. Foster take double

PETA-GAYE BECKFORD won four events to help G.C. Foster College win the women's section of the intercollegiate track and field championships at G.C. Foster College yesterday.

Beckford, a national senior representative won the long jump with a leap of 6.06m. Her other victories came when she hurled the shot put 12.83m, the discus 36.08m and the javelin 42.44m.

G.C. Foster College won the female section with 213 points, well ahead of University of Technology (155), Knox Comm-unity College (73), University of the West Indies (39), CASE and Mico Teachers' College (19 each).

G.C. Foster College's men team also topped their division by scoring 205 points, again over UTech (190), Portmore Community College (65), Knox (55) and Excelsior Community College (38).

UTech's Andre Drummond was a triple winner, while national 400m champion Shericka Williams of UTech, her teammate Kaliese Spencer, G.C. Foster's Merrecia James and Ricardo Page were also double winners.

Drummond won the 800m (1:51.3) over his teammate Evan Allen (1:52.4); the 1500m in 4:08.07 over G.C. Foster's Ricardo Edwards (4:11.93) and the 5000m in 16:16.38.

Williams won the 200m in 23.64 ahead of her teammate Marcia Wollery (24.76) and the 400m in 55.12 ahead of Christine Day, also of UTech (55.95).

Spencer won the 800m (2:09.1) and 400m hurdles in 60.10.

Spencer and Williams also played a key role on UTech's record-breaking mile relay, which clocked 3:39.06 to beat G.C. Foster (3:55.76). They erased the previous record of 3:44.86, they set last year.

James' double victory came in the 3000m (10:57.75) and 1500m (4:53.38) while Page took the discus (46.82m) and shot put (15.66).

G.C. Foster's Carl Barrett (10.22) beat UTech's Nester Carter (10.27) in the men's 100m while UTech's Nyoka Cole (11.59) beat her teammate Wollery (11.95) in the women's race.

Gregory Little (54.39) won the men's 400m hurdles, Trezar Lopez of UTech (2.00m) took the high jump.
