Marlon Samuels puts Melbourne in front
published: Sunday | April 9, 2006

SAMUELS

Marlon Samuels scored a century on yesterday's opening day of Melbourne's two-day Super Cup cricket game against Lucas at Melbourne Oval but had to share the spotlight with paceman Ashuman Kentish who bagged seven wickets for 74 bowling for Lucas.

Batting at his familiar number four position, Samuels blasted 13 fours and one six in his 120-ball knock, enroute to scoring an even 100.

Earlier, West Indies opening batsman Christopher Gayle, batting at number five, ran out of partners and failed to reach three figures when Lucas batted. Gayle made 76 not out in helping Lucas to 197 all out.

Melbourne, who won the toss and fielded, replied with 253.

Apart from Samuels, who played the shot of the day a lofted hit over cover off Kentish for six Donovan Pagon (40) and Andre McCarthy (44) were the only batsmen to make any real contribution as Kentish enjoyed a field day.

Kentish, despite conceding 74 runs in his 13 overs, claimed the wickets of four top line batsmen (Damion Jacobs, 8, Pagon, Yannick Elliott, 0, and McCarthy) and then cleaned up the tail.

Batting a second time late yesterday, Lucas were two without loss after three overs.

At Kirkvine: The Jamaica Defence Force are under attack from defending champions Manchester who are not too far away from first innings points.

Manchester, led by 77 from Gary Graham and 35 from Donovan Powell made 225-9 declared to which JDF were 25-3 overnight. David Powell (2-2) and Stephan Patterson (1-6) are the wicket-takers for Manchester thus far.

At Chedwin Park: Westmoreland were bowled out for 231 to which St. Catherine Cricket Club replied with 63-1 at stumps.

Cleveland Davidson topscored for Westmoreland with 65 while Gavin Wallace (3-48) and Odean Brown (3-51) starred with the ball for the 'Saints'.

Dean Morgan (4) is the man out for St. Catherine. Danza Hyatt (39) and Damion Bryce (16) will resume battle today.
