Reggae Boyz fly out today for friendly
published: Sunday | April 9, 2006

BOXHILL

JAMAICA'S REGGAE Boyz will depart shortly after nine o'clock this morning for the United States, to engage their hosts in an international friendly on Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m.

The squad includes 18 players, most of whom have already represented the senior national team in international competition and four British-based professionals in goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts, central defenders Claude Davis and Damion Stewart, along with attacking midfielder Jamal Campbell-Ryce, who made only surprising cameo appearances for the junior national team a couple years ago.

Several untried players are also included in forwards Dane Richards and Ryan Johnson, from universities in the United States, powerful Boys' Town utility player Oneil 'Bigga' Thompson, the relatively new Portmore duo Jason Morrison and Demar Stewart, Damion's younger brother, and the very tall and strong Newton Sterling.

GOOD SEASON

The regulars are headed by midfielder Jermaine Hue, who has been established as the new team general since the Gold Cup tournament last year; Khari Stephenson, who looks the obvious choice to run the important central midfield position; and the explosive Jermaine Johnson, who is working his way back from injury after putting in a relatively good season back home since returning from Britain.

Wendell Downswell, the team's head coach, will not travel with the team as he is in Suriname with the Under-21 team looking to qualify for the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games. However, he is expected to join the team in the United States.

SQUAD: Donovan Ricketts, Shawn Sawyers, Damion Stewart, Claude Davis, Garfield Reid, Omar Daley, Oneil Thompson, Demar Stewart, Khari Stephenson, Jermaine Johnson, Fabian Dawkins, Jamal Campbell-Ryce, Jason Morrison, Jermaine Hue, Teofore Bennett, Newton Sterling, Dane Richards and Ryan Johnson.

The list of officials are: Crenston Boxhill (Jamaica Football Federation president), Burchell Gibson (JFF general secretary), Everton Tomlinson (head of delegation), head coach Downswell, Paul Campbell (goalkeeper coach), Sean Samuels (physical trainer) and Dr. Charles Roberts (team doctor).
