Vigilante justice worrying
published: Sunday | April 9, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WRITE expressing concern with regard to the growing and dangerous trend of vigilante justice which is now a common and seemingly acceptable occurrence in Jamaica.

Not only are our citizens blatantly taking the law into their own hands, they seemingly do so with the covert and often overt approval of the wider society.

It is also clear that the police can do little or nothing with regard to this dangerous trend as in most cases the intervention of the police only serves to add fuel to flame as they are often the subject of abuse and attack from the bloodthirsty mob.

This level of lawlessness can neither be condoned or allowed to continue. Swift and decisive actions on the part of our lawmakers and the police must be brought to bear to stem this unlawful trend. Persons involved in mob or vigilante justice must be brought before the courts to answer for their criminal acts.

It should not be that police persons are injured and property (vehicles) are damaged without the perpetrators being held and duly punished.

Failure to act swiftly and decisively will only encourage this growing mob justice to escalate to an uncontrollable level where innocent persons are killed or maimed.

I am convinced that if our citizens are made aware that swift and definite sanctions will result from their unlawful actions then they will think twice.

I am, etc.,
