Spring close to the drop
published: Monday | March 13, 2006

Paul-Andre Walker, Staff Reporter

BRACES FROM Jermaine Anderson and Shawn Hunter left everything square between relegation bound Constant Spring and fourth from bottom Wadadah in Wray and Nephew National Premier League action at the Spring Complex yesterday.

Constant Spring were the first team off the mark in the 2-2 draw when Hunter headed home a corner in the seventh minute.

Wadadah wouldn't die though, and equalised through Anderson's header in the 32nd minute.

Wadadah would then get the go-ahead goal after Anderson's head proved a deadly target in the box for a 68th minute strike.

Constant Spring had to wait until the 86th minute before they were again back on the scoresheet, with Hunter getting the all-important strike.

While Constant Spring may have played well to get back into the game, the draw might mean that Spring will be playing in the Kingston and St. Andrew Football Association Super League next season.

With seven points separating Wadadah (30) in ninth and Spring (23) in 11th, and five games to go for the latter, the road out of the relegation zone is firmly stamped detour.

"The hole is getting deeper and deeper and we need to dig ourselves out of it," said Constant Spring coach, Maurice 'Danny' Lyn.

While Constant Spring are in dire straits, Wadadah aren't comfortable either and still have to worry about falling into the dreaded zone as well.

"I just hope that with four games to go we can avoid relegation," said Wadadah coach Anthony 'Follies' Williams, who watched his team, not for the first time, give up a late equaliser.

TRYING TO KEEP CALM

"It is a recurring decimal, I'm just trying to keep calm. I don't want to have any high blood pressure," said Williams.

It could have been worse for Williams though. With 90 minutes already in FIFA referee Peter Prendergast's book, Constant Spring got the chance of the season when Gaymeon Watkins was through on goal with a bouncing ball and only the goalkeeper at his mercy.

He snatched at the chance and creamed his drive high over the bar to make sure that Spring were to have no further joy.

"We got the winner in the dying seconds and gave it away," said Lyn. "These are some serious times. We need to start winning some games. If we had won this game I would have said yes I'm in the premier league," added Lyn.

"I think I need a paint brush, drawing is all I've been doing all season," Lyn said, already looking to the possibility of relegation.

GOALSHEET

CONSTANT SPRING 2

Shawn Hunter 7th, 86th

WADADAH 2

Jermaine Anderson 32nd, 68th
