Flat Bridge repairs to be finished by month-end

REHABILITATIVE WORK on Flat Bridge in St. Catherine should be completed by the end of March, according to Steven Shaw, communication and customer service manager at the National Works Agency (NWA).

Over the past two months, the NWA has been doing rehabilitative work on the bridge, which sustained extensive damage during the last two hurricane seasons.

The project, which was estimated to cost $16 million, formed part of the Caribbean Development Bank's (CDB) Flood Damage Fund. The work to be done involved the de-silting of the Rio Cobre River and repairs to two damaged piers on the Flat Bridge.

Mr. Shaw said the part of the project that involved the de-silting of parts of the river was already complete. He, however, noted that the work being done on the Flat Bridge was still in progress. Mr. Shaw said that provided the weather remained favourable, the NWA expected that leg of the project to be finished shortly.

"We are now pouring concrete to fill the voids that have been created by the erosion over time and once we have accomplished this task, the next step is to have the scoured sections of the roadway rehabilitated and repaved," he said.
