THE EDITOR, Sir:
IN RECENT TIMES I have seen four members of my church fall prey to senseless criminal violence - the two Missionaries of the Poor, Albert Johnson in Montego Bay (who by the grace of God is still alive) and Mrs. Vilma Mais.
These four persons were assaulted while tending to the Lord's work - the MOPs in their home, Mr. Johnson in a clinic, Mrs. Mais at church. They were all people who metaphorically and literally devoted themselves to washing the feet of the poor, tending to the least of our brothers and sisters, as Christ bade us do.
"I FEAR"
What will become of my church, I fear, when doing the acts of mercy that our Lord asks of us puts our lives in danger? Will we quietly withdraw, isolating ourselves out of fear? Will we be forced to choose the safety of our persons and our families over the duty to be active in Christ? Will our pool of missionaries and workers dry up?
It is not Christian to live in fear, but we are human. I pray that we find the strength to resist this terror that our society has wrought, but I am unsure that we will. I ask our brothers and sisters of all religions to pray for us in these dreadful times.
I am, etc.,
