Simpson Miller moves to settle Windalco dispute
published: Monday | March 13, 2006

PRIME MINISTER-DESIGNATE Portia Simpson Miller will tomorrow hold talks at Jamaica House in the impasse between the West Indies Alumina Company (Windalco) and the National Workers Union (NWU), which represents the workers.

Mrs. Simpson Miller intervened on Saturday in the dispute and again met with the parties yesterday.

It is further understood that she has been chairing the meetings also attended by Labour Minister Horace Dalley, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labour, Alvin McIntosh, and Labour Consultant, Gresford Smith.

STRIKE NOTICE EXPIRED

Meanwhile, at Jamalco, a strike notice expired Saturday night after protracted inconclusive wage negotiations.

According to the Ministry of Labour, after a marathon 14-and-a-half-hour meeting at the Ministry which lasted until 4:30 a.m. on Saturday, the 72-hour strike notice issued by the Union of Technical, Administrative and Supervisory Personnel on Jamalco was withdrawn.

Both parties were able to reach an understanding on the major outstanding issues in the dispute. They are to return to the ministry tomorrow, to continue the discussions.
