Sandy Bay upset favourites Mt Salem with a 3-0 victory
published: Friday | January 6, 2006

WESTERN BUREAU;

SANDY BAY created the biggest upset to date in the 2005-06 Captain's Bakery/Western Confederation Super Football League this week when they scored a surprise 3-0 win over the fancied Mt. Salem in their big Zone A clash at Kenilworth in Hanover.

The Sandy Bay team, which won for the first time in three outings, got its goals through Melvin Donald (two) and Roy Gilchrist. In their previous two games it drew 1-1 with Orange Hill and 0-0 with Granville.

Despite their defeat, Mt. Salem continue to lead the standings in Zone A with six points, having notched 2-1 and 2-0 wins over Clarke's Town and Fogo respectively in their first two games. Sandy Bay are now in a close-up second place on five points.

In the other Zone A games on Tuesday, Fogo and Clarke's Town battled to a 1-1 draw while Granville and Orange Hill also played to the same scoreline. In Zone B, Mount Pelier hammered Negril 3-0, Salt Spring and Harmony ended in a 1-1draw while the Altobar and Invaders game was not played.

EARLY AGGREGATION

In their game against the much-vaunted Mt. Salem team, the Sandy Bay aggregation struck early when Donald caught the Mt. Salem defence napping in the third minute of play and gleefully fired past goalkeeper Garfield Johnson, making the halftime score 1-0.

With Mt. Salem looking ragged and disorganised in their attack and putting little pressure on the Sandy Bay defence, they fell further behind in the 72nd minute. The alert Donald again breached their defence and found the back of the net, giving Sandy Bay a 2-0 lead.

Sandy Bay sealed the issue in the 83rd minute when the hard-working Gilchrist was rewarded for his resilience. He broke clear and made no mistake, booting home for the final 3-0 margin of victory.
