Friendly Jamaicans
published: Friday | January 6, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I WAS a recent visitor to Jamaica where I spent a one-week vacation in Westmoreland. I was absolutely delighted to meet and speak with a large number of Jamaicans who were, without exception, extraordinarily friendly. I am now privileged to call a number of Jamaicans friends, and I trust these friendships will continue for many years.

I am troubled by the great poverty that I witnessed, and as the chief executive officer of a large American charity, I would like to begin a programme of shipping new bicycles to various locations in Jamaica for use by working people. However, I am told that the duty fees would be financially prohibitive. I shall investigate this matter further in the hope to find a suitable solution. In any case, please know that I will be a frequent visitor to your country.

I am, etc.,
