Elated by Carib economic bloc

THE EDITOR, Sir:
I NOTE the interest by the heads of Caribbean states on the start of the Caribbean economic bloc. I too am elated by this measure for our countries to relate and co-operate with one another.
It is a pity that in the past some selfish and shortsighted politicians caused the break-up of the West Indies Federation. It is my belief that their actions have allowed the collective economic and technological development of our region to stagnate and lose ground globally.
The political parties and persons (some now passed on) who instigated the break-up of the federation should now be hanging their heads in shame. Let us all hope that in the interest of our region and its people, especially the younger ones, this venture is supported fully. We can take as an example the successes of the European economic bloc and build ours to be even more successful. We have the mental and technical abilities to succeed.
I am, etc.,
