BARBADOS - Police investigating fireworks explosion
published: Friday | January 6, 2006

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (AP):

POLICE IN Barbados were investigating yesterday the death of a man whom they believe was killed when the fireworks he was storing exploded.

David Griffith, 51, on Wednesday was storing fireworks left over from New Year's celebrations when they blew up in an explosion heard within a 2-mile (3.2-kilometre) radius around a house in Collymore Rock, a village just outside the capital, Bridgetown.

The house went up in flames, and Griffith was burned beyond recognition.

It took firefighters over an hour to control the blaze.

The explosion forced a nursery school across the street to close, and a funeral service scheduled to be held in a nearby church was cancelled.
