IDB helping to develop tourism plan
published: Tuesday | October 4, 2005

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC:

GUYANA'S TOURISM sector is getting help from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and other agencies to develop a five-year strategic plan to boost the industry.

Key local sector officials accompanied Dr. Phillip Heneghan, the IDB representative to several popular tourist attractions in the Essequibo River recently to help familiarise him with the sector.

PROMOTING TOURISM

While there, Dr. Heneghan held discussions with the regional and business officials to discuss ways of promoting the tourism industry could be boosted in the Essequibo.

The IDB official assured "that much of what is said will be incorporated for the development of the tourism sector," the Government Information Agency (GINA) said.

Executive Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) Indira Anandjit said various sections in the industry would be expanded soon.

"These include developing the yachting and 'birding' industries in Guyana, because of the many species of birds in Guyana," GINA quoted Anandjit as saying.

Anandjit also disclosed that GTA would be implementing regulations for tour guides, tour operators, hotels and resorts from January 2006.
