published: Tuesday | October 4, 2005

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC:

A TWO-DAY conference aimed at developing a sustainable environment for Internet growth and connectivity in the Caribbean gets under way in Barbados today.

The October 4-5 Caribbean Internet Forum is the third forum held in the Caribbean region, and it is an important regional initiative to facilitate communication and cooperation, at both national and regional levels.

CONFERENCE ATTENDANCE

The conference will be attended by officials from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Telecommunication and Information Administration (NTIA).

They will make presentations and lead discussions on the U.S. experience in encouraging the development of emerging technologies for broadband deployment, convergence, and voice over IP (VoIP).

The officials will also discuss the importance of a competitive marketplace and transparent regulatory practices to establish a sustainable environment in which broadband can flourish, according to a statement from the United States Embassy here..

The two-day conference is organised by the Caribbean Internet Forum (CIF) and is also aimed at providing Caribbean technology experts and government policymakers with an opportunity to further explore policy tools aimed at formulating conducive regulatory environments that foster competition, investment and growth in emerging Internet-based technologies.
