CABLE & WIRELESS wants to introduce a single national rate for local calls by October 1.
Senior vice-president for retail and residential services. Evan Garricks, told The Gleaner that Cable & Wireless hoped to announce the rate at a press conference next Wednesday. This, however, will be subject to approval by the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR).
The company aims to introduce the rate for calls made within Jamaica during peak, weekday hours and what the company said would be a "significantly lower" rate for weekend, evening and night time calls.
It will replace intra- and inter-parish calling rates.
"Fixed line to fixed line calling remains the cheapest means of communication in Jamaica today by far, and the Single National Rate removes any boundaries," said Mr. Garricks.
