Dismantling garrisons
published: Friday | August 26, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE PRIME Minister is reported to have said recently that garrisons cannot be dismantled by the Government unless people's freedoms are infringed. Whether or not people's freedom are infringed, government needs to find a way of curtailing the spiralling crime.

The politicians were entrusted by the Jamaican people to run the country and this includes curtailing criminal activity that ordinary persons can go about their daily activity without fear.

FOSTERED BY POLITICIANS

They cannot govern a country they were elected to govern and then leave it in a state of anarchy. All garrisons were created and fostered by politicians, whether the older or the newer. What matters is how are we going to dismantle them and address the crime situation which is quite serious and needs to be dealt with forthwith.

Both parties practise this politics of exclusion and they use illiterate and semi-literate men to achieve their objectives of winning or attempting to win elections for them. They have created criminal disorder with almost anarchy throughout the country which is becoming unbearable for ordinary citizens.

In order for garrisons to be dismantled, politicians must divorce themselves from criminals/dons. The private sector and middle class need to stand up so that government and opposition can revamp the type of politics of exclusion, hate and guns.

I am, etc.,
