Proceed with caution
published: Friday | August 26, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I READ with some misgiving your article in The Sunday Gleaner of August 21 concerning young women being recruited for work in Dubai.

Are these young women aware that their visas will apply only to the company they are recruited for? If they are not satisfied, they will be unable to seek other employment.

There have been many incidents of workers being unpaid for three months or more with no redress, and with no Embassy or Consulate available to them, their situation could become dire.

There are of course many reputable employers in Dubai, but these young women should proceed with extreme caution and find out as much as they can about any promised employment. In the hope of finding a way to give their families a better life, they could find they have virtually enslaved themselves.

I am, etc.,
