INVADERS remained planted to the foot of the Wray and Nephew National Premier League table after playing to a 2-2 draw with neighbours Village United in the Trelawny derby at Elliston Wakeland Centre yesterday.
Despite being the higher ranked team and favourites to win the match, Village must consider themselves lucky as they owe their point to a blunder from goalkeeper Jermaine Maxwell and a header by Charles Hines.
Village took the lead in the 22nd minute through Omar Allen who headed home a cross from Francois Anderson. They held the lead until the 65th minute when Paul Hardy equalised. Invaders looked as if they would have taken all three points when Sheldon Bryan put them ahead in the 78th minute before Hines' equaliser in time added.
Invaders coach Cassman Williams was a disappointed man at the end of the game. "As you saw the equalising goal came from an error. The goalkeeper basically made a mistake where he called for the ball and the ball had too much height. He should have punched the ball instead he tried to hold it and actually released it on an opponent's head," Williams said.
Village's Dr Dean Weatherly felt that his team slacked off in the second half. "The first half went reasonably well. In the second half we came out sleeping. I guess the players came out there a bit overconfident and underestimating Invaders," Weatherly said.
