NSWMA concern about increase in gang warfare
published: Monday | April 25, 2005

THE NATIONAL Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) has voiced its concern with an escalation of gang warfare within the Riverton Community which has been impacting negatively on the operations of the Riverton Disposal Site.

In a press release dated Friday April 22, the NSWMA, said this has resulted in an increasing level of absenteeism among persons engaged to work on the disposal site due to fears they have expressed for their safety.

A number of short and long term implications have been highlighted by the NSWMA if the violence persists.

AFFECT SCHEDULES

Among them is the possible curtailment of its operating and opening hours. This will significantly affect collection schedules for household/domestic waste in addition to commercial waste streams, the NSWMA has disclosed.

The long-term impacts identified include, delays to the start up of the NSWMA scheduled formal recycling activities on the landfill. The Authority has also foreseen possible delays in the construction of the planned hazardous waste reception/containment area.
