THE EDITOR, Sir:
MY BROTHER was arrested sometime ago and was in the Mandeville lock-up for six weeks. Whenever I went to look for him, it was so sad and disturbing the manner in which the police treated us (visitors) law-abiding citizens.
I remember visiting my brother on Sunday, December 5, 2004. There was an old lady (about 65-70 years) visiting her son. It was so embarrassing, the manner in which this particular District Constable dealt with her. He was there carrying on and shouting at her to taste the food quickly. She got so nervous that the food was turned over. When it was my turn, the same treatment was handed to me.
I don't know if once you are employed in the Justice or Security Department/Ministry, you are trained to act in a particularly inhumane and disrespectful manner, as the exact behaviour was duplicated at the Resident Magistrate's Court office in Mandeville.
When my brother got bail, on December 17, 2004, the bail bond was done at the courts office. There were about six workers congregating while about four persons (including myself) were there waiting to be attended to. I checked my watch when I realised I was waiting for 15 minutes. During this time, no one as much has asked us if we wanted assistance. When we started calling to them, it was so disrespectful the manner in which they came to us, hissing teeth and dragging their legs as if we had no right to disturb them.
I strongly recommend that these people MUST go on customer service training as we the public (law-abiding and tax-paying citizens) are their customers and should be treated with respect.
I am, etc.,
