THE HEART Trust/NTA has teamed up with the ministries of Health and Local Government to provide training and certification for professionals in the beauty industry, following the enactment of new regulations to govern the industry.
The new rules, which took effect last May, are the Public Health (Barbers and Barbershops) Regulation 2004 and the Public Health (Hairdressers, Beauty Therapists, Cosmetologists and Beauty Salons) Regulation 2004.
"We assess them on prior learning and if they are competent, we will certify them," said Hyacinth Morgan, training agent in HEART's Enterprise-based training office.
UNAWARE OF THE REGULATIONS
"If there are gaps, we recommend training in those areas," she said. "We can also work with the individual to improve competence in weak areas."
Mary Dawes, president of the National Association of Hair-dressers and Costmetologists, says that while most of her 1,800 members are licensed, there are pockets of practitioners who may still be unaware of the regulations.
"We are here to say to them that here are standards and we want you to come to a seminar, get in tune and do the right thing," Ms. Dawes said. "Cosmetology and hairdressing are disciplines and we appreciate that there is now something in place to guide. it."
