AUSTRALIAN DAVID Moore has been appointed assistant coach of the West Indies cricket team.
Moore, a senior coach at Australia's Commonwealth Bank Centre of Excellence, will join his countryman Bennett King, who has been appointed Head Coach of the Windies team.
In announcing the appointment in a release Roger Brathwaite, Chief Executive Officer of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), said Moore was the first appointment to be made among the support staff.
A release from the WICB said Moore's "experience and training in coach education and cricket development will also be a tremendous asset to the development of cricket throughout the region".
LEVEL III COACH
The new Assistant Coach is a Level III coach certified by Cricket Australia and the Australian Coaching Council. He is completing his doctorate in Education from the University of New England where he is majoring in competency development, curriculum development, programme evaluation and coaching education. He possesses both a bachelor and masters degree in Education from the University of Wollongong.
Moore, 40, is a former Sheffield Shield player for New South Wales.
Meanwhile Trevor Robertson, Director of the CBCE Australian Cricket Academy where King served as head coach, congratulated both saying:
"Bennett and David's appointments are reflective of the strong regard with which Australian coaches, players and administrators are held around the world, and Australian cricket should be proud that our home grown talent is in high demand.
"We are fully supportive of their drive to develop the game globally and we wish Bennett and David every success," added Robertson.
DECLINED PREVIOUS OFFER
Australian King declined a previous WICB coaching offer last year on the basis that some members of the regional board never gave him the kind of support he needed by going ahead and appointed Gus Logie as his assistant.
It is theorised that the WI Board's reason for doing that was to groom Logie as a successor.
Approximately two hours before announcing Moore's appointment, Braithwaite was asked by The Gleaner in a telephone interview to comment on the same subject and whether the Logie issue had actually led to the breakdown in negotiations between King and the Board last year.
He responded thus: "What I will say is that we have appointed a head coach and he will have full say in who his assistant coach is."
Continuing, he stated: "There is no point in looking at what happened in the past. We're very much looking forward and the way it is structured now, the head coach (King) has the say on who his support staff will be.
"There will be an announcement coming out shortly... those (support staff) positions will be determined by the head coach. Once the head coach is in place, he will make the determination as to the number of his support staff."
