Kingston Wharves addresses congestion problems
published: Tuesday | November 2, 2004

IN ORDER to ensure that effective and coherent measures are taken to address the congestion problem at Kingston Wharves Ltd., a committee comprising representatives of the stakeholders using the port has been established.

Chaired by Kingston Wharves Ltd., the committee includes the customs department, the Port Trailer Haulage Association, Ports Operation Committee, Custom Brokers Association of Jamaica and the Port Authority of Jamaica.

MEASURES TO BE IMPLEMENTED

An important decision emanating from the work of the committee was that, effective Monday, November 8, Kingston Wharves will implement the following measures, which will be supported by all relevant parties:

Gate opening would be 07:00 hours to 18:00 hours, following which official overtime requests will be required.

Pre-staging of full containers will take place providing requests are received no later than 16:30 hours the day preceding the collection date. Requests must be sent to Alrick Mitchell, operations manager of Kingston Wharves, by fax: 923-9129 or email: operations@kwljm.com

Post-implementation assessments will be held on a regular basis.

The committee hopes that these and other measures to be introduced will improve the quality of the service customers receive at Kingston Wharves.
