THE EDITOR, Sir:
President George W. Bush often invokes his Christian faith when
campaigning, yet, I believe that some of his actions could be deemed questionable
in this regard. The Bible speaks about caring for the poor, yet, President Bush
gave a huge tax break to the top richest one percent in the United States. President
Bush says he wants to preserve human life and as such is against abortion, yet,
during his tenure as the Governor of Texas he presided over several state executions.
The Bible speaks about promoting peace as opposed to war, yet,
under President Bush's leadership, America pre-emptively invaded Iraq. This
action has resulted in the untimely and unnecessary deaths of over a thousand
American soldiers and over 13,000 Iraqi men, women and children. Humility is
a strong Christian characteristic, yet, despite all the facts that have come
to light following the war in Iraq, President Bush is seemingly too proud to
admit that he made any mistake where America's invasion of Iraq was concerned.
Jesus sought to unite people while here on earth, yet, under
President Bush's leadership America is more divided today than at any time in
its modern history. Additionally, due to harsh disagreements over how to handle
Iraq, prior to America's pre-emptive strike, the relationship between America
and its allies has severely broken down. Arguably, based upon many of his actions,
President George W Bush does not exemplify a very convincing picture of Christianity.
The Bible states, "They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny Him."(Titus
1:16)
