LoJ opens new sculpture park
published: Tuesday | November 2, 2004

TRAFALGAR ROAD has received a facelift from the establishment of a sculpture park at the junction with Lord Nelson Way.

The park, which has transformed the area significantly, is the gift of Life of Jamaica (LoJ) to the city of Kingston. LoJ has made a commitment to be responsible for the beautification of the section of Trafalgar Road from the park to the British High Commission.

The park features two statues, a rockery, benches and a walkway. One of the pieces, titled Support, is done by sculptor Basil Watson.

According to sources at the company, this piece of sculpture has served as a source of inspiration to many at LoJ over the years, helping members of the company to focus on the reality of strength through team spirit and unity. LOJ's president,

Richard Byles, speaking at the official opening of the sculpture park, held recently at NCB's Trafalgar Road car park, said that LoJ had taken their commitment further than the beautification of the roadway to the establishment of the park.

Noting that the company was very alert to its role as a good corporate citizen the President said, "LoJ's commitment to beautify this area with a sculpture park is a loud acknowledgement of the fact that we stand ready to shoulder our role as a good corporate citizen. LoJ's pioneering role in beautifying New Kingston is a matter of historical fact. No other company has contributed as much to the modern orderly development of the New Kingston area."

GREEN AREA

Minister of Education Youth and Culture and Member of Parliament for the area, Maxine Henry-Wilson, recalled that the park designated a green area for Trafalgar Park residents, and had been for years, a source of problems creating at times, an unbearable major dust nuisance.

With the involvement of LOJ, she said the residents now had a delightful environmentally suitable space for relaxation.

Minister of Transport and Works, Robert Pickersgill, added his congratulations to the contribution made by LoJ.

Citing the example of Holruth Park, he indicated that it was important for corporate Jamaica to become engaged in the establishment and or maintenance of these areas to ensure that the purpose for which they were created is honoured.

The beautification of New Kingston's major roadway, Trafalgar Road, has been undertaken by LoJ, Jamaica National Real Estate, Jamaica Mortgage Bank and National Commercial Bank.

In addition to its Trafalgar Road projects, LoJ has so far donated $15 million to a number of charitable organisations including the Office of National Reconstruction and the Ward Theatre Foundation.
