TVJ, please do better
published: Friday | August 27, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IT IS with deep disgust that I watched tonight's newscast (August 25, 2004) on Television Jamaica. An item was reported about an elderly gentleman who was killed by vicious criminals. I had my TV on mute as I did not wish to hear about some other awful news they were reporting.

When I glanced up that item was over, however, I saw what I thought was a road traffic accident so I turned the sound on, only to find out they were reporting on the death of the elder. Included in the item were graphic pictures of this old man's blood and gore plus his dentures.

Do we have to have a nightly viewing of blood and gore? Why are no warnings given that we are about to view something disturbing? What about children watching these news items.

I am a retired health care provider and find these sort of news reports nauseating and much too sensational for my liking. When I lived in other countries, I did not see this sort of thing on TV without a warning before it is shown. TVJ, Please do better.

I am, etc.,
