THE EDITOR, Sir:
THIS AN open letter to Beenie Man.
In an online Associated Press news article headlined 'MTV bans Beenie Man As Gays Plan Protest', which appeared in Yahoo, Thursday, August 26, 2004, you are quoted as saying, "I don't know what they are fussing about." This insensitive response, if that is what you said, is a classic example of the great disregard that you have for people's right to exist, their sexual orientation notwithstanding.
But, let me tell you what people are fussing about. They are upset that you are using your songs to incite violence and death against a set of people who have done you no wrong. And, you refuse to genuinely recant your vicious lyrics against that particular set of people. You are abusing your freedom of expression; it comes with responsibility. You are earning money from selling songs that preach death for your fellow Jamaicans.
The sad irony is that, some of these gay Jamaicans, for reasons inexplicable, buy your songs. I don't. You are earning money from the same gays who you want to wipe from the face of this earth. In another quote, it is reported that, you said, "...I want to teach people... the right way of life." That is balderdash! You are teaching people including young impressionable minds to hate and to kill.
You really don't understand that you simply cannot tell people how to live their lives. No one is telling you how to live yours. Leave people's sexuality alone.
I am, etc.,
