The police situation
published: Friday | August 27, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

CONCERNING FRANCIS Forbes' comment that he has done his best, and feel that his job performance is fair, speaks to the heart of the problem. Com-missioner Forbes is bereft of ideas, know-how, or the will to deal with the criminal situation in our country. It follows therefore that the Commissioner is part of the problem and not a part of the solution.

It is astounding to hear them talk about police officers being short of uniforms. In what democracy would this be allowed to happen? Wake up Jamaica, we are becoming like Haiti, in terms of the anarchy, and Colombia, in terms of the bloodshed and mayhem.

First of all, the uniform is impractical; it is strictly ceremonial, and needs to be disbanded. Just take a look at police uniforms the world over and see for yourselves if the ones our brave cops are forced to wear have any practicality.

Between the politicians, the media pontificators, and the judges who treat cops like they are the bad guys, it is an uphill task. God bless and keep my homeland.

I am, etc.,

MICHAEL BECKLES
