Legalise abortion
published: Friday | August 27, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

DR. HALL'S call for the legalisation of abortion is something that deserves consideration, for several reasons. First, abortions are being performed, whether or not we like it. However, since the practice is illegal, it is being done by unlicensed practitioners in unsanitary and unsafe locations. Young women, our daughters and sisters, are dying.

Second, although most religions oppose abortion, many individuals do not share that belief. The government should not legislate morals, no matter how passionately we may feel about the issue. The government should not be the enforcement arm of any church or religion.

And last, legalising and regulating abortion will allow us to protect our young, pregnant daughters from the back-ally abortionists and allow us to identify the trends that lead to unwanted pregnancies and, hopefully, intervene in the communities before conception.

As individuals, we have a right to practice our faith according to its teachings, but not impose it on others.

I am, etc.,
