J'can students excel in A' Levels worldwide
published: Friday | August 27, 2004

By Omar Anderson, Gleaner Writer

WHILE JAMAICA'S athletes continue to excel on the track in Athens, Greece, the island's students continue to make their mark in academia worldwide.

According to the Overseas Examinations Office (OEO), three students have ranked among the top 10 in geometrical and mechanical drawing at Advanced Level.

They are Gayrol Taylor from Glenmuir High School, who placed fourth, Adrian Loague from Ardenne High School, who tied for eighth, and Kevin Brown of Wolmer's Boys' School who placed a joint 10th.

Cadian Drummond of Wolmer's Girls' School placed joint ninth in history, while Shawna-Kaye Lester, a private candidate, placed fourth in Spanish at the Advanced Subsidiary Level.

Contacted yesterday, Clement Radcliffe, principal of Glenmuir High in Clarendon, said he felt elated as the school's name had gone international.

VERY RARE

"We have a good programme here which has been quite successful over the years," he said. "It's very rare that any student fails geometrical and mechanical drawing."

For her part, Esther Tyson, principal of Ardenne High School, told The Gleaner she was also proud that Adrian had performed well.

"His teacher speaks of him as someone who has been talented in that area," she said. "We are very proud of him accomplishing this feat on a worldwide basis."

Meanwhile, the examination office said students will receive prizes from Cambridge International Examinations at a special ceremony to be held early in September. Included in that ceremony will be Jamaica's sole top 10 candidate from the June 2003 examinations, Dionne Brown, who placed first in general paper.
