Lawson in Ja squad to face England
published: Saturday | February 28, 2004

KINGSTON, (AP):

CRICKET OFFICIALS yesterday named a 15-man squad to play against England next week in the visitors' first match on their two-month Caribbean tour.

The three-day match begins on Monday at Sabina Park with Brenton Parchment leading the Jamaica XI team as captain, the Jamaica Cricket Association said.

The Jamaican squad includes fast bowler Jermaine Lawson, 22, who has been out of competitive cricket since May when umpires called the player for throwing during the West Indies' fourth Test against Australia in Antigua.

Missing from the line-up is West Indies player Wavell Hinds, who is recovering from the groin injury that forced him to leave the tour of South Africa in January.

Other players include Sean Findlay, Danza Hyatt, Donovan Pagon, Tamar Lambert, Matthew Sinclair, Bevon Brown, Dwight Mais, Evon McGinnis, Lorenzo Ingram, Dwight Washington, Mario Ventura and Maurice Kepple.

36-YEAR SERIES LOSING STREAK

England are seeking to break a 36-year Test series losing streak in the Caribbean.

Following next week's warm-up match against Jamaica, England will take on a University of the West Indies Vice-Chancellor's XI on March 4-6.

England then meet the West Indies for the first Test in the series on March 11 at Sabina Park.

The last time the teams met in a Test series was in 2000 when the West Indies toured the United Kingdom. England won the five-match contest 3-1.

England's squad includes captain Michael Vaughn, Nasser Hussain, Marcus Trescothick, Mark Butcher, Graham Thorpe, Andrew Flintoff, Gareth Batty, Chris Read, Rikki Clarke, Paul Collinwood, Stephen Harmison, James Anderson, Ashley Giles, Matthew Hoggart, Geraint Jones and Simon Jones.
